Mountain arnica (Arnica montana L.), also called mountain tansy, mountain wormwood, or mountain tincture, is a perennial plant from the Asteraceae family. In folk medicine, it was used to treat muscle pain and bruises as well as rheumatism, dysentery, and malaria.
Currently, it is used in products that regenerate damaged tissues (also after burns) and control bleeding, as well as in the treatment of joint inflammations, ligament strains, and sprains. Additionally, arnica soothes insect bites, acts as an anticoagulant, and improves blood circulation. The flowers, stems, and roots of arnica contain many valuable ingredients, including essential oil, flavonoids, phenolic acids, triterpene alcohols, bitters, carotenoids, and tannins. The flower heads contain numerous active substances with anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, and antiseptic effects.
